The Cosmopolitan Cocktail is often a big hit with the ladies, but it doesn’t need to be effeminate and froofy.

Cosmopolitan Cocktail History: The “Cosmo” has been a staple of almost every cocktail bar since the late-70s, when it burst into the pop scene amongst the fanfare and pomp of pride and rebellion in San Francisco. Unfortunately, it was quickly co-opted into a frilly looking thing that groups of women drink when they head out together to dish on their relationships and sex lives (we’re looking at you, Sex in the City).

Despite its apparent femininity, the Cosmopolitan Cocktail can still be made to look manly and sophisticated. It all comes down to the serving vessel, which in our case is a masculine rocks glass that is typically suited to three fingers of bourbon. So yes, you can serve this drink without looking like you’re pandering to your date. And, let’s be honest, they are pretty delicious.

  • Cosmo Glass Tumbler
  • Shaker
  • Bar knife

  • 2 oz vodka
  • 1/2 oz Triple Sec
  • 3/4 oz cranberry juice
  • 1/2 a lime
  • 1 piece of orange peel
  • Ice

  1. Place ice into shaker
  2. Add the vodka and Triple Sec to shaker, then squeeze in the lime and add cranberry juice
  3. Put lid on shaker, then shake the living hell out of it
  4. Drop a couple cubes of ice into the tumbler, then strain the shaker over the ice
  5. Cut a thin slice of orange peel, curl up tightly, drop it in and serve

* We like serving ours over ice, especially when serving it in a tumbler, but it can be served neat if that’s your preference.

* When shaking the cocktail, make sure you hold onto tightly to the lid. And we mean it when we say shake the living hell out of it. If done right, it should be somewhat cloudy after you pour it.

* Glassware is important for this one. We constantly find interesting tumblers in thrift stores for a great bargain – just try to find a couple that match. (If you’re interested in purchasing something higher-end, you can do that here.)
